What is matrescence coaching?

You know that feeling you've had but can't quite explain since you've become a mother? Something's shifted in you but you're not sure what. Maybe you're finding it a lot harder than you thought you would. Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed, resentful or lonely. Maybe you're questioning whether you're doing the right thing, or if you're the only person feeling like this. Maybe you're struggling with your new identity, anger or comparison. Or maybe you'd just really like to talk to someone who gets it.

All of that isn't in your head. It's real. And it's called "matrescence". Matrescence is the emotional, psychological and identity shift that happens when you become a mother. My coaching training focuses solely on supporting mothers through that transition.

Why I do this

Becoming a mother knocked me sideways: fertility struggles, a hard first year, burnout, losing my confidence and my sense of who I was. I was lucky enough to have coaching to lean on, and it got me through it, and changed how I showed up the second time around. That's why I trained as a Matrescence Coach, and I'm currently completing my Mama Rising Facilitator certification. I know first-hand what coaching can do, and I want to pay it forward, so other women can have a space to feel supported, untangle the messy parts of motherhood, lessen the guilt, lower the noise and get more confidence and clarity in their day-to-day.

If you're thinking...

"I don't have enough time for myself as it is - how can I find time for coaching?"

As a mother, we hardly get any time for ourselves. That's real, not an excuse. And that's exactly the problem coaching is here to help with, not something you need to solve before you're allowed to start. Fifty minutes, once a week, protected just for you, is rare. Most people find it during a nap, or by trading an hour with their partner, or bringing in a grandparent. It won't always be easy to carve out, but it's yours, and it's important.

"I can't justify spending money on myself right now."

It's worth asking yourself gently: what is it costing you to keep going like this? A little time invested now often gives you back more later, energy and money included. This is an investment in you: your mental health, your ability to show up as the mother and person you want to be.

"I don't really know what coaching is, and maybe what I actually need is therapy, not a coach."

While therapy looks at your past, I'm much more interested in your present. Coaching is a collaborative process designed to help you explore where you are, where you want to be, and what may help you move towards that. It's a space to speak out loud with someone trained to ask the right questions and make reflections, to help you develop greater awareness and make choices that feel right for you. If I believe that your needs would be better supported by another professional, I will tell you.

"I know I need support, but I'm really scared about what truths it might uncover about myself or my relationship."

That fear makes sense, and it doesn't mean something's wrong with you. Wanting to protect yourself from what you might find is normal. My job is to hold space while you look at what's actually going on, at your pace. You're in control of how far we go and how fast, always.

"I'm not sure I deserve support - my life is actually pretty good. I'm not in crisis, other women have it so much harder."

You don't have to hit rock bottom to be allowed this. Most of what we'd work on isn't an emergency, it's the quieter stuff: the guilt, the second-guessing, the resentment, the days that get away from you. That's exactly what this is for.

About me

Arianna Lee

Matrescence and Motherhood Coach

Before coaching and having my own kids, I'd already spent years immersed in the world of motherhood. I founded Pachamama, an online community for new and expecting parents that grew to over 10,000 people. Through it I connected with thousands of women, heard and shared their stories, hosted a podcast, and ran talks workshops for new mums.

None of that prepared me for going through it myself. Becoming a mother knocked me sideways: fertility struggles, a hard first year, burnout, growing resentments, losing my confidence and my sense of who I was. I was lucky enough to have coaching to lean on, and it got me through it, and changed how I showed up the second time around.

That's why I trained as a Matrescence Coach, and I'm currently completing my Mama Rising Facilitator certification. I know first-hand what coaching can do, and I want to pay it forward, so other women don't have to figure it all out on their own.

I live in Lisbon and work online with mothers all over the world.
